Alan Lee Simpson, affectionately known as “Al” or “Big Al,” passed away on May 19th, 2023 surrounded by his family, in Greenwood, Indiana, at the age of 79. He valiantly battled complications from Parkinson’s disease.
Born on January 20, 1944, in Columbus, Indiana, Al was the fourth child of Pearl and Robert Simpson Sr. He had a vibrant and eventful life, leaving an indelible mark on those around him.
During his formidable years, Al attended Columbus (North) High School, and he shared many memorable moments with his siblings, Robert Simpson Jr, deceased, Del Hannah of Carmel, Indiana, and Stan Simpson of San Antonio, Texas. Del played a significant role in Al’s upbringing, providing care and love. And, despite a mischievous incident that led to the loss of one of his fingertips, Al cherished the bond he shared with his brother Stan.
At the behest of his long time High School Friend, Gary Bender, Al joined the United States Air Force in November 1962. He was stationed at Grissom Air Force Base in Kokomo, Indiana until 1968.
Al’s passion for music was evident in his early years leading him to become the leader of a popular rock band after leaving the service. He played guitar and sang in rock and soul bands during the early 1970s, captivating audiences along the “Holiday Inn circuit” in South Florida. His guitar skills and captivating voice endeared him to the local community, especially the officers and deputies who frequented the renowned Big Daddy’s “Playtime” in Pompano Beach, Florida. Al’s outgoing personality and close proximity to law enforcement officers fueled his interest in the field.
He started as a Reserve Officer (Auxiliary) in 1973, accompanying certified officers on patrols and actively participating in city events and security details. In 1975, he attended the Broward Police Academy and later became a full-time Officer.
On May 24, 1986, in Pompano Beach, Florida, Al married his beloved wife Janet Kimball Simpson. Al and Janet celebrated 28 years of marriage together and over 40 years of friendship, laughter, and adventures.
Al’s professional career was marked by his dedication to serving and training others.Throughout his tenure with the Pompano Beach Police Department, Al showcased his versatility, serving as a member of the SWAT Team, a narcotics officer, a Field Training Officer, and a proponent/trainer for uniformed officers working on bicycles. His commitment extended beyond his retirement when he joined IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Association) as an instructor, imparting valuable knowledge and skills to countless students.
After retirement from police work and training, Al and his bandmates rekindled their musical talents, forming “The Viagraphonics” and delighting audiences in the Columbus, Indiana area.
Apart from his professional achievements, Al was a dedicated family man. He treasured his children, Larry Simpson, deceased, Sharissa Ulrey (Mike) of Cloverdale, Indiana, and Kimi Martinez (Danyel) of Greenwood, Indiana, and took immense pride in his grandchildren, Brittany, Briana (Breezy), and Brandon Ulrey. Al also had a deep love for his siblings, Bob Simpson, Del Hannah, Ev Simpson (Bob’s wife), and Stan Simpson.
In his leisure time, Al found solace in being with his family, mountain bike riding, playing guitar, creating CDs of his recorded songs for loved ones, marveling at cloud formations, and witnessing breathtaking sunsets. Over his 79 years, Al made homes in Columbus, Indiana, Pompano Beach, Florida, Deerfield Beach, Florida, Greenwood, Indiana, and Cloverdale, Indiana.
Al Simpson’s legacy will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a larger-than-life personality, a thoughtful individual who was always there for others, and a big man with an even bigger heart. He embraced life with courage and love. Though Parkinson’s disease may have taken his body, it could never conquer the spirit that defined him. In the face of adversity, Al fought bravely until his last breath, leaving behind a lasting example of resilience and unwavering determination.
Visitation will start at 1:00 PM and conclude before the service at 4:00 PM at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service, 481 West Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46142 on Thursday, May 25, 2023.
