Elva Mae Spears

Elva Mae Spears left this world peacefully at the age of 93 on August 23, 2024. Elva was born to Ora E. and Martha A. (Hicks) Newport in Indianapolis, IN on February 1, 1931.  A woman of quiet grace and boundless love, Elva lived a life filled with kindness, dedication to family, and a deep appreciation for the joys of life.

Elva was known for her soft-spoken demeanor and her remarkable ability to remain calm and collected. Despite her gentle nature, she was profoundly social and never lost her temper, a testament to her inner strength and grace. Her kindness was evident to all who knew her, though she often worried deeply about those she loved, reflecting her deep capacity for care.

Family was the cornerstone of Elva’s life. She was fiercely devoted to her loved ones, especially her three sisters, with whom she shared a bond so strong that they became affectionately known as “the sisters at the Y” due to their frequent gatherings at the YMCA pool. This close-knit group was a source of immense joy and support for Elva, and their shared moments at the pool were cherished highlights in her life.

Elva was a devoted wife for 63 years, providing a loving and stable anchor to her husband’s adventurous spirit. Together, they created a life rich with love and shared experiences. Her love for family extended to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were touched by her warmth and generosity.

A woman of many passions, Elva found immense joy in nature, traveling, and walking. Her mission trip to Columbia reflected her deep-seated commitment to making a positive impact on the world. She also loved singing in her church choir, where her close church friends and church “family” became an integral part of her life.

Elva was an extraordinary cook, known for her fabulous meals and adventurous spirit in exploring new recipes. Her cooking was a true expression of her love for her family and friends. She also delighted in shopping for herself, amassing a collection of coats and numerous pairs of shoes, while also generously buying gifts for others.

Her enjoyment of card games, board games, and dominoes brought endless joy to family gatherings. New Year’s Eve was particularly special as she celebrated with her siblings, relishing the tradition of eating cabbage, which became a beloved part of their annual festivities.

Elva was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, and her siblings; Ora Newport, Eleanor Werner, Marguerite Jedinak, Mary Stewart, Norman Newport, and Louis Newport.

Elva leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and a deep commitment to her family and community. Her memory will be cherished by her surviving relatives, including Tom (Paula) Spears, Andy (Linda) Spears, 10 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who supported Elva throughout her life and during her final days.

A visitation will be held at Southport Presbyterian Church, 7525 McFarland Blvd, Indianapolis, IN 46237 on Tuesday, August 27 from 10am to 12 pm, where family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Elva. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation. Entombment will take place at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, IN.
