John Wayne Duncan, 80, Indianapolis, IN, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2021. John was the son of John Wilson Duncan and Henrietta M. (Crooke) Duncan. Both parents preceded him in death in 1997. John was a 53 year member of Brookside Masonic Lodge #720, 45 year member of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, receiving the Honor of 33 at Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1997, and also a member of the Murat Shrine. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Chorus, (1978-2020), and served as Manager for 33 years. John was a past President of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite 33 Association, and later served as the Association’s Secretary/Treasurer. He was also a member of National Sojourners Ft. Harrison Chapter #66.John was a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Safety Patrol from 1958-2010, assisting Speedway guests in Stand C (1958-1959), Stand A (1960-1963), and Stand E for 52 years. He was Life-Member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway International Association of Old-Timers. In 1974, he served as Metropolitan Division Chairman with the Greater Indianapolis United Way. He also had served as an advisor for Junior Achievement for Central Indiana. John was Board member for the USS Indianapolis Museum. In February of 2005, John was honored by being “adopted” into the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization, receiving Honorary Member status. For many years, John assisted the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization with event planning and reunion activities. In May of 2006, John was honored with a membership in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. John was employed by Diamond Chain Company for 34 years, retiring in 1998. During his tenure at Diamond Chain, he served in a variety of positions. After his retirement, John was employed at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, serving as Public/Community Relations manager, Valley Hospitaler, Advertising Director and Director of Member Services. John was the husband of Mary Evelyn (Preston) Duncan, and the father of two children, Jennifer Lynn Duncan Bailey (Brad), and John Wilson Duncan. Other survivors include two sisters, Sharron Mae Kurz of Greenwood, IN, and Linda Joyce Snell (Tim) of Muncie, IN; and two granddaughters, Maranda Leigh Bailey and Alaina Jade Gordon-Duncan. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter, Madison Marie Bailey. Visitation will take place from 4-7PM, Wednesday, at Wilson St.Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main Street. A funeral service will take place at 11AM, Thursday, at the funeral home, concluding with a 33rd Masonic Memorial Service. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Scottish Rite Cathedral Foundation, 650 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204; or to the Children’s Dyslexia Center, 650 N. You are missed by so many of us, and have left a huge place in my heart empty. Be with God and will see you soon.

On behalf of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the Order offers its deepest condolences and is proud of a life well lived by Colonel Duncan.

My brother John Ramsey and I are so sorry to hear of John's passing. Our mother Lenora Ramsey was a relative of his mother Henrietta and our dad Shubal Ramsey also worked at Diamond Chain. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family, especially his wife Mary and sisters Sharron and Linda. You will be in our prayers.

John was one of the best human beings I've ever known. He would do anything to help anyone with no questions asked. I have more memories with him than can be posted here including tailgating at Purdue, sitting with him in Stand E at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, USS Indianapolis reunions, the Scottish Rite, etc. He was a lot of fun to be around but more importantly, he was a true friend. John meant an awful lot to my Dad and Mom. John stepped up when my parents needed a friend and our family will be eternally grateful for it. I made sure that he sat with my family at my wedding because he was family to us. Thanks to him, I will spend every May at the Speedway and every Fall at Purdue with my wife and kids. Godspeed Mr. Duncan, I will miss you but will see you again someday.

Very sad to hear of John's passing. I worked with John several years at Diamond Chain. My sympathy and prayers go out to his wife and children. He truly was one who made a difference.

So sorry to learn of John's passing. I feel privileged to have known John and to have him as my friend, from the first day I came to work at Diamond Chain nearly 50 yrs ago. We used to laugh at the irony of him being a Purdue guy and having a red and white Corvette and I, being an IU grad, having a gold and black one. Rest in Peace.

I'll miss you very much my dear friend . Rest In Peace .I so enjoyed staying at your home on my visits and enjoying the great breakfasts you made ,sharing great times with you and Mary. Maybe we can share that

Mary, Jenny, Brad,I was so sad to hear about the passing of John. Our frequent discussions about Life, Purdue and the Indy will be so missed. He meant so much to me personally and my family. Please know his memory and life lessons he taught me will live in my heart always.

Sorry to learn of John's passing. He and I received our 33rd together in Grand Rapids. Always enjoyed meeting with him during our brief meetings at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Gail Kemp, PGM
