Colonel Philip N. Swain passed away Monday, March 26, 2012. He was the son of Charles Oscar and Martha Helen Hiatt Swain. He was born December 1, 1928 in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from Lizton High School. He was a veteran of WW2, Korea and Vietnam, serving in the US Marines. He retired from the Marines in 1969 as a Master Sergeant. During his over 42 years of active and reserve military service to the US and Indiana, he received over 40 awards and citations. His first being the WW2 Victory Medal, the last being the Indiana Distinguished Service Medal. He was also appointed to the Legion of Hoosier Heroes. He retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Company in 1990 as a building engineer. Col. Swain served the State of Indiana in the Indiana Guard Reserve, retiring in 1999 as the Chief of Staff. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and member of the Brownsburg Post 331, a lifetime member of the Association of the Army, a lifetime member of the Indiana National Guard Association, a lifetime member, past president and a founding father of the Inaidanpolis chapter of the International Facility Managers Association and lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a volunteer at Hendricks Regional Health for several years, donating over 5,000 hours of time. He was a Past President of the Hospital Guild. He was also the co-founder of the Indiana Kyudo Renmei, a traditional school of Japanese archery, a founding father of the American Kyudo Renmei and a lifetime member of the All Japan Kyudo Federation. He is survived by his wife, Takako Matsui Swain and brothers, Richard and David Swain and sister, Carolyn Ann Woods. Friends will be received, Thursday, March 29, 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home, Jamestown, Indiana.
