Florence Harper, 88 years old of Brownsburg, IN, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at her residence. She was born February 20, 1921 in Newman, Illinois, daughter of the late Charles F. and Nora Wax Bender. She married C.C. Harper, who preceded her in death. She lived in Logansport before moving to a farm in Jamestown with her husband and son. Mrs. Harper worked in Danville, Ill., at Musebeck Shoe Company, the VA Hospital and Lauhoff Grain Company. She graduated from Butler University in January 1965. She taught 6th grade and 5th- and 6th-grade math at Granville Wells Elementary in Jamestown from 1966 to 1970. During that time she attended summer school to earn her master’s degree. She then taught in Northwest Hendricks Schools from 1970 to 1982. In 1974-1975 she took a real estate course and earned a broker’s/salesperson’s license. After obtaining her license she worked for Century 21 during the summers and evenings from 1975 to 1980. In 1978 Mrs. Harper took a computer course at IUPUI and became a computer enthusiast. In 1982 she moved to Florida with her sister, where she was a volunteer income tax assistant (VITA). She was an avid bowler. In 1943, the first year she bowled, she won a lady’s singles tournament. She bowled in Crawfordsville where her team, the Gutter Gerties, won first place. Survivors include her son, Jeff Harper; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews, from Illinois, Texas, Indiana, Wyoming, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Friends will be received Monday, January 25, 2010, noon – 2:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home, Jamestown, Indiana. Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Monty Barker officiating.
