Avis was born in Albany, Missouri to Kenneth and Viola Murrell on February 20, 1933. She graduated from Northwest Missouri State University and later earned a master’s degree at Indiana University. It was there that she met her husband of nearly 64 years, Joseph Woods; together, they raised their 3 beloved children and enjoyed watching their grandchildren grow. Avis found great joy in the friendships she built through her commitment to several organizations. She was an active alumna in Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, she generously shared her time and talents at Southminster Presbyterian Church for over 55 years, and she enjoyed fellowship in P.E.O. Avis will be remembered for her gentle spirit, loyal service, and sweet smile.
Avis was preceded in death by her parents, brother Wayne (WWII), and twin sister Alma. She is survived by her husband Joe; son, John and daughter-in-law Susan; son, Edward; daughter, Ann Bruehl and son-in-law Terry, and grandchildren Jack, Kate, Elizabeth and William.
Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday, May 21, at Singleton & St. Pierre Funeral Home at 7602 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, IN. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am. Burial will be at Arlington East Hill Cemetery in Arlington, IN.
