A Celebration of Life for Brett Michael Smith will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 3:00 p.m. at the North Salem Christian Church, North Salem, Indiana with Pastor Rob Baire officiating. Calling will be from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Brett joined his parents in heaven on April 4th. Born November 30, 1966 in Metairie, LA, he is the son of the late Mike and Sue (Stewart) Smith. Brett graduated from Danville High School in 1985. He attended Vincennes University and was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity. He served in the US Navy from 1988 – 1992 as a Damage Controlman, Petty Officer 2d Class, serving aboard the USS Puget Sound. He was a veteran of both Desert Shield and Storm and a member of American Legion Post 145, Avon, Indiana. He served the residents of Hendricks County for over 20 years working as a County Engineer Inspector and then later as a Building Inspector with the town of Plainfield. He loved fishing, arrowhead collecting, college basketball and listening to music and playing drums. His passion was spending time with his family and friends, sharing stories and laughing loudly and often. Brett is survived by his daughter, Tressa (Remi) Clinkenbeard, of Merritt Island, FL, sister, Dawn (Randall) Hoffman of Fort Leavenworth, KS, granddaughter, Kelsie Clinkenbeard, nieces, Caroline and Emma Hoffman and nephew, Shawn Hoffman. Bret was always nice to me no matter the circumstances. It is hard not seeing him drive through the neighborhood.

Brett was a polite and pleasant persons to be around. His smile will be missed around the Plainfield Town Hall.

My friend Brett prepared my office to make me feel at home my first day at work in 2003.He has made me feel at home every day since, we shared basketball, fishing, great lines from old movies, music that only a few of us knew existed and a daily salute indicating our respect for the service that we and others gave for their country. He was a close friend with our family, he will truly be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Brett 20 years ago. Brett had the rare ability to listen to every word and make your conversations always seem truly meaningful. I am going to miss our lunch visits while sitting around talking about whatever was on our mind but always containing a constant laugh.....man am I going to miss that laugh. I wish we had more time together but I will cherish the time I was able to spend with you Brett . I wish your family and friends the best and you will always have a special place in my heart.

Brett has been a great ambassador for the Town of Plainfield for the past years. His infectious smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed. May God's blessings be with his family.

I met brett when he started with the Town of Plainfield. I was currently employed there working for the street department. Brett and i soon figured out we had many common interests and became close friends. We went on many fishing trips together, local and out of state. The man knew how to fish. As I look at all of my big fish pictures, they were all taken by brett. He also loved to play the drums, but very few people knew that he could sing the hell out Dwight yoakum. Wich he did at my last party in front of many people. He later told me he had never sang in front of anyone before. He was a very good person and a blast to hang out with. I will truly miss him. Brett was one of the nicest fellows I have ever met, calm and collected. One couldn't find a more helpful worker, so egar to help, always had very good ideas. I will miss him. With his disposition heaven is where he is now, see ya one of these days Brett.

Our paths crossed often, and he was always first to acknowledge me. As I thought of him upon hearing the sad news, these are some things he reinforced for me: smile more, share more, and be generous with your time. I will miss seeing him.

Brett (BM Smith, Brettster...etc) was an amazing guy and a close friend of our family. Our friendship started when he became one of the guys who loved coming over for a good home cooked meal to knowing pretty much everyone in all of my then husband's and my families. Drinking buddy, story teller and like a member of the family. The things that stand out most is his tales about he and Dawn when they were young (he was the one who got to pee standing up), the constant joking with Matt about "them" to the time in Florida partying with Matt, Dana and Becky cranking old Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl" and singing that on top of their lungs. Brett was awesome at keeping in touch with his buddies as well and I am sad that we didn't reconnect again this year when he sent me an email to an older account that I had just recently checked. To Dawn and family....you have my sympathies - you truly were his pride and joy. I am sure those who saw him on a daily
basis will also miss him sorely as he really did light up everyone around him. We are all blessed to have crossed paths with such a warm, genuine, kind friend as Mr. Brett Michael Smith was to all. God bless all those who knew and loved him. RIP Brett - Thanks for the memories. Love ya.

I knew Brett for barely over a year, but I already miss him. He always had the coffee going before I showed up for work.

Brett always enjoyed a good joke so hopefully he appreciates that. He was just so personable and genuine, you couldn't help but like and admire the guy immensely.

To his family, you have my sympathy for dealing with such a tragic loss in unsuspecting circumstances. I hope that you find solace in your grieving by believing the you will see him again someday.

Your family will be in my family's prayers.

I work for Hendricks Power and talked to Brett several times a week when he would call with inspection approvals. He would always talk to me more then just work related things. We always talked about his vacations and mine and about family. He was so very nice and I enjoyed talking to him. I never had the chance to meet him in person. I will miss his calls! I am so sorry for your loss and my prayers go out to the family of such a great man!

My heart is breaking for you, Dawn. I wasn't lucky enough to get to know Brett very well but every time I did have the chance to see him, he always had a smile...he seemed like such a kind soul, like you. You are in my prayers daily.

Brett was hands down one of the nicest people i have ever known. I will miss truly him and his fishing stories. Sad time for Town of Plainfield. Been a pleasure knowing him.

Brett was just a wonderful person. From the first time we met him he always spoke. Wither it was doing an inspection or in a restaurant he always said "Hi how is everyone doing?" and took time to talk. A very personable person. The Town of Plainfield will miss him as I know we will.

Brett was my dad's best friend and like an uncle to me since I was in diapers. I love him and miss him dearly.

I had the pleasure of working with Brett at The Town of Plainfield. He was my first friend when I moved to Indiana, and remained so even after I left, and moved away. Brett never met a stranger, everyone he met became a good "buddy". He started each day with a smile and a funny story. I always looked forward to going to work because my best friend, and honorary brother was there to make my day a little brighter. I will never forget Brett, he will always hold a special place in my heart. Through my tears a smile appears, once again I'm reminded of one of his funny tales. My thoughts and prayers are with his sister Dawn, the subject of many endearing childhood stories, and with his extended family. May God bless you during this difficult time.

Brett was a great friend and fellow employee. I will deeply miss our conversations about our favorite college basketball teams and our annual fishing trip to Kentucky. He was a kind soul and good man. May he rest in peace with condolences to family.

Life sometime is short but Brett had cover a lot in his short time with all his friends and family. I was on Plainfield Town Council and always look forward to tall to Brett about his fish trips.
He was a outstanding young man, hard worker and great to around.
