Evelyn Lorraine Hudson

On November 1, 2022, Evelyn Lorraine Hudson, 86, left this life to claim her heavenly reward. Born on July 30, 1936, in Chicago, IL to Ellsworth and Ruth Eldridge (Romine), she eventually moved to Indianapolis with the love of her life, William Jack Marks along with their children, Gary and Cindy. They found a faith home at Southport United Methodist Church and Evelyn became involved in the Women’s organizations there and she and Jack would open their home to the Youth Groups for meetings and get-togethers.

Jack and Evelyn were starting a detective agency, Shortage Control Specialist, and Evelyn was going to become an investigator when Jack became ill and eventually passed. Being the incredible woman of strength and faith that she was, Evelyn took on the job of raising two teenagers on her own. Her organizational skills and people skills served her well in any role she embodied.

She became involved with Christ United Methodist Church, in Indianapolis and was very active in ministry. Her faith was a source of comfort and consolation for her. During this time, she met and married Herman Hudson. Together they would open their home to those in need and ‘adopt’ those who sought a soft place to land. Evelyn’s heart knew no boundaries. She would send cards and letters to family, friends and any people who needed support. She had a flair for writing and would often write memories from their past that she would give to the family on holidays.

Evelyn lived for the change of seasons. Her home would reflect each calendar change, Winter, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Spring, Easter, all would get their own time in her home. Her favorite season was Christmas, and she had the most fun decorating then. While she was in Indianapolis her home was the epicenter for celebrations. She would prepare amazing dishes and each place setting had a party favor that would elicit laughter and on occasion flying objects.

Being a grandma was a source of joy for her. Dylan, Terran and Asher spent time with her and knew they were loved. Evelyn would prepare special meals for their birthdays that they got to choose, she would create a theme that reflected what they were passionate about at that time and even personally make the decorations. In the past two years she doted upon her new grand-dog, Beau, and found great joy when he would visit.

Evelyn embraced life and was always up for an adventure. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter Cindy and visiting relatives across the United States. Her garden was a source of pride for her, and she would plan out each new Spring with excitement.

After Herman died Evelyn took on a new adventure and moved to Bloomington, IN, to live with her son Gary and her daughter-in-law, Jill. She had her own apartment where she carefully planned out her next phase of life. She had a small garden and side yard that she decorated with delight. Although most of her life was spent in the Chicagoland area, she was a die-hard Colts fan and Sunday afternoon revolved around their games in the autumn.

It was at this point of her life that Evelyn found Christ Community Church in Bloomington. She met and has made many good friends who have encouraged her and supported her through a few life challenges these past five years. Through all her trials Evelyn has relied upon and found comfort in her faith. Her laughter, love and undying curiosity are legacies she leaves to those who survive her.

This includes son Gary Marks, daughter Cindy Marks, daughter-in-law Jill Vandermarks and her brother Bill Eldridge. Grandchildren; Dylan (Erica) Marks, Terran Marks, Asher Marks and Grand-dog Beau Vandermarks. Dear to her heart are her nephew Brad Eldridge and his partner, Katy Miller.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, and her late husbands.

A visitation will be held Saturday November 19,2022 at Singleton & St. Pierre Funeral Home, 7602 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46227 from 2-3:30 pm. A celebration of life will immediately follow the visitation with an opportunity to share stories of Evelyn.  Burial will take place at a later date in Chicago.
