Sad to hear of Al's passing. My favorite memory was when we took a trip to Aspen Colorado to play at a club there. The trip there was pretty exciting as it was winter and we had a station wagon packed full of instruments and Tirk Wilder rode with us. When we finally arrived we went to the bar where they were going to play. They ask him to set up and play. After they did a few songs, the manager of the bar stated that that wasn't the kind of music that they had there, but they did let us stay and play. We enjoyed our trip there. Well we didn't ski. We did ride horses in the snow and that was a lot of fun. He will be missed and his love by many.

When I met Al more 20+ years ago in south Florida, I learned that we shared the same commonalities in life. We like playing music in bars, we were both "recruited into police work" in Broward County, Florida we share the same name and initials and we both have a passion for police on bikes and the love for IPMBA. Al was a great mentor, educator and facilitator for this awesome organization. His techniques have been passed down to many other IPMBA instructors for generations to come. His smile and humor and the love for safe cycling with be sorely missed but not forgotten. Allen L. Stotler Sunrise Police Department

There are many reasons we call him 'Big Al'; not the least of which was his heart and soul that everyone in his sphere of life came to admire and respect. Al was big on friendship and camaraderie and forged lasting friendships everywhere he went. The accompanying picture shows Big Al at the Indianapolis IPMBA conference surrounded by some of his best friends and admirers: That's where he loved to be. I understand our Lord has already put him in charge of making all complete their ABC Quick Checks before entering the pearly gates. Al was always big on safety. God bless you Big Al. We'll miss you.

Rest in Peace my brother. Al and I shared a lot of times together in the world of Law enforcement SWAT and Narcotics being the headliners for me. Actually lived as room mates with Frank Lightbourn and myself and from being military veterans and then law enforcement officers we always had each others six. Many stories thru the years. My condolences to Jan and the Family, he will be missed.

Al Simpson was a great friend, colleague, riding buddy and mentor. He & I rode with a group in Moab & Fruita, and we taught IPMBA Instructor Courses together. I co-taught with Al in his last course before he retired from teaching. Al was an amazing human being who I will sorely miss. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family but know that his spirit lives on within me and he leaves a lasting legacy with public safety cyclists and IPMBA.

Al was a great friend and mentor to me through the years and our times with IPMBA. His booming laugh and sense of humor were absolutely unmistakeable. The picture is from when we taught at the first Instructor Course out of the US, in York,UK. We had a blast despite one of us almost being run over on our bikes each day due to looking the wrong way. The world is lessened by his leaving but the memories of times spent with him are extraordinarily bright. Love ya and miss ya Al.

A l Simpson, PCI #165T/EMSCI #005T, shaped a generation of public safety cyclists, serving as mentor to many. Al was certified as an IPMBA Police Cyclist in 1995; a Police Cyclist Instructor in 1996; an EMS Cyclist Instructor in 1999; and an Instructor-Trainer in 1998. He served on the IPMBA Board of Directors from 1999-2002, including several terms as Education Director. Over the course of his IPMBA career, Al taught or co-taught eight Police Cyclist Instructor Development courses; 20 Instructor Courses (21,888 student-hours); 65 Police Cyclist Courses (31,368 student-hours); 26 EMS Cyclist Courses (6,464 student-hours); and six Security Cyclist Courses (944 student-hours). He taught a total of 60,656 student-hours, which translates into 2,527 days, or 6.9 years. Al's legacy lives on in those he taught who have gone on to teach others how to safely and effectively operate a mountain bike in the line of duty. Keep on pedaling, Al.

I knew Al from the monthly local Police Pistol Combat Matches held at the Pompano Beach Range back in the late 70's to 1980's, He was always a great and funny competitor and we shared a lot of laughs. I'm very sorry to hear that he's gone. We will always remember him as a great competitor and police officer.

Big Al was my instructor trainer over 20 years ago. He never backed down from a challenge and when a student said you can’t ride up stairs Al just looked at them, smiled and proceeded to show that it can be done. He motivated and inspired and the world was a better place because Al was here. He will be missed but never forgotten.

To my second dad, Al Simpson, may you rest peacefully in heaven. You were a blessing to us all. Thank you for welcoming me with open arms, raising and loving me unconditionally as your second daughter and as Kimi’s best friend. My childhood was so bright because of you. I got to sit front row at my first concert, swim with dolphins, go to many theme parks, throw our own concerts in the garage, and many more adventures. Thank you for everything, I will always cherish you and these memories in my heart. Rest in peace, Dad. Love always, your daughter, Peach.

the first time I saw Big Al was at an IPMBA conference many years ago. He was riding a mountain bike and I thought, "That bear is riding a bike!" Over the years, at conferences, I got to know Big Al better. It was always a joy to see him every year and listen to his stories. He always greeted me with that big bear hug and smile. I shall never forget his kindness and dedication. I feel blessed that I knew him.
