Alan Harold Voorhis, 84, a life-long Boone County and long-time Zionsville resident died November 24, 2015. Mr. Voorhis was born July 2, 1931 in Thorntown, IN to Carl Eugene and Esther Frances Wright Voorhis; they preceded him in death as did his his brother, Kenneth Voorhis. Mr. Voorhis was a 1951 graduate of Lebanon High School and honorably served his country as a member of the Indiana Army National Guard. On June 22, 1952 in Warsaw, IN, Alan married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Hightshue; this past June they celebrated their 63rd year of marriage together. After living in Lebanon for a short time, they settled and began raising their children in Zionsville. Alan was an excellent Archer, and was the first person to get a perfect score at a downtown Indianapolis indoor tournament in the early 70’s. Alan was an avid hunter and for many years spent every November in Michigan hunting deer with his bow and rifle. Alan was a well known craftsman who was the manager of Metzger’s Lumber for 32 years in Zionsville. When not overseeing the operations of the lumber yard, he could be found on his tractor mowing or raising his famous tomatos. Many have claimed that there was no finer tomato than an “Alan Voorhis-raised” tomato, and once you had one no others could compare.Mr. Voorhis is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jean Hightshue Voorhis; his children, Lester A. Voorhis, Michael W. Voorhis (Monica), and Marcel L. Wallace (Michael).
