David Allen Owens, 67, of Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
David was many things — a father, brother, uncle, friend, outdoorsman, cyclist, teacher, — a list that barely scratches the surface of his eclectic interests and impact. A great listener with deep blue eyes and unfathomable intellect, David could be relied upon as a sounding board for talks about life, where no idea was too big or wild.
He had a gift for capturing moments with one-liners only he could conjure — little time capsules of David all of us blessed to know him will carry forward. You could look, see the mischievous grin, and know something was coming, yet never be ready for the punchline.
Despite his quick wit, David was the slowest man alive. A man who respected speed limits so much he never touched them. A man who rode century rides, summited big mountains, and did everything else in life at his own pace. Perhaps he enjoyed being so present in the moment that he held onto them just a little bit longer than the rest of us.
David dared to be himself and every life he touched is better for it. That spirit marches on in his proudest achievement — his son, Damon, a drummer.
David grew up on the west side of Indianapolis where he was born to John (Jack) Owens and W. Jean Owens (Hohn, Spear) on February 8, 1956. A member of Ben Davis High School’s 1974 class, he went on to Purdue University, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in General Finance. While at Purdue, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Indiana Theta Chapter. From Purdue, David went on to Indiana University and achieved an MBA in Public Finance in 1980.
With his MBA in hand, David took a position as a Financial Analyst with RCA Consumer Electronics in Indianapolis. Subsequent jobs with Anacomp and L-3 Communications in business planning and finance led him to Sarasota, Florida, where he started a family and began his own business, BizArt, in 1987.
In 2006 David moved to Alpharetta, Georgia, where he worked with special needs high schoolers until his eventual return to Indianapolis in 2021.
David cherished time with his family and friends, felt a deep connection to nature, was passionate about long weekend rides on his Specialized bicycle, felt IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500 in his DNA, and was renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge and far-reaching taste in music.
David’s positivity, calm charisma, dance moves, hugs, and playful spirit will be missed.
David is survived by his son Damon Jeffrey Owens and his wife Ashly of Sarasota, Florida; sisters; Susie Owens and her partner Dennis Ward of McCordsville; Jackie (Owens) Miley and her husband Greg Miley of Noblesville; brothers; Rusty Owens and his wife Aljean of Winsted, Connecticut, and Jeff Owens and his wife India of Fairland. Many nieces, nephews, and friends who knew him and loved him are also left.
Family and friends will gather for visitation on Friday, May 26, from 11 am until the time of his memorial service at 1 pm, at Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Care, Zionsville Chapel, 125 W. Sycamore St. Zionsville, Indiana 46077.
