Donald Roy Lawyer, 94, of Shirley, Indiana, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on December 11, 2023.  He was born August 31, 1929 to the late Lee and Agnes (Cornelius) Lawyer in Plainville, Indiana. He was a graduate of Pendleton Heights High school, class of 1947. He then met and married his first wife, Carolyn S. (Stottlemeyer) Lawyer on September 24, 1950. Don grew up farming and began a career in construction after being an MP in the Army at Fort Knox from 1951 to 1953.  From this union, two boys were born to continue a legacy that Don had started. From then on Don worked ever so hard to make sure that the farming fire that was lit in his boys was to be carried on.  After Carolyn’s passing, Don married Ruth Ann (Gardner) Lawyer on February 14, 1988 and they joined their loving families.

Don was a man that would do anything to help when asked. Especially, if it meant having a second lunch.  He continued in his construction career, retiring after building Shenandoah High School. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing trips with his brothers and woodworking.  There is not a home of a family member you can walk into without finding a piece of his one of the kind wood creations.  He showed his love through his thoughtfulness and time he spent constructing these heirlooms.  He did not want the recognition for his work to be more than knowing he was providing a useful tool to his family.  Don enjoyed gardening and of course he was diligent in watering the flowers every day.  He also couldn’t pass up a cherry pie with strawberry ice cream on top!  He is so loved by his whole family.  They will truly miss his, “HUH?” Earlier this year he was awarded his 50 year pin by the Shirley Masonic Lodge #531.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann; sons, Eric (Peggy) Lawyer and Gary (Lisa) Lawyer; Step-sons Andy (Atlanta) Lawyer, Mark (Connie) Lawyer and Tim (Linda) Lawyer; step-daughters, Dawn (Andy) Pokorny and Sheila (Gary) Rushton. Grandchildren, Wendy (Kevin) Terrell, Chad (Brandi) Lawyer, Josh (Rachelle) Lawyer, Shannon Lawyer, Lindsey (Dustin) Lowe, Seth (Lindsey) Lawyer, Breanna (Austin)  Thompson, Brock Lawyer (Kindra Stidham), Karey (Jeremy) Davis, Brandon (Lori) Whistler, Rick (Angela) Whistler,  Chelsea Morris, Gary M. (Amber) Rushton, Cody (Ashley) Rushton, Oakley Lawyer, Heather (David) Craig, Jordan Lawyer; 35 great-grandchildren and a sister, Barbara Schaller.

Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn; a son, Kent Lawyer, his parents, and several brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday December 17, 2023 at Condo & St. Pierre Funeral service and Crematory, 130 S. Main St. Wilkinson, Indiana. Masonic service to begin at 7p.m.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday December 18, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park, 6805 Doctor M.L.K. Jr Blvd, Anderson, IN 46013.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

I am saying a sad goodbye to my wonderful friend of more that twenty years Don Lawyer.My Dear deceased wife Vada and I met Don and Ruth Ann in Texas and became the best of friends and spend many weeks in their home and they in ours in Bay city Michigan.They adopred us into their army group and we went with them every year for many yuears to their army reunions.We loved them in life and mourn Vada and Don in death untill we can join them again in the great beyond.Rest in peace our dear departed ones until we see you again..Lafayette Yarbrough
