George Richard Shelburne, 80, of Zionsville, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024.
George was born in Boone County, IN on December 30, 1943, a son of the late Milford Shelburne and Mavoureen (Wood) Way. He married the love of his life, Jene’ Rhoades, in 1964. They enjoyed 58 years of life together before her passing in 2022.
George graduated from Zionsville High School in 1962. After high school, he began working for Panhandle Pipeline, and in 1966, he was drafted into the United States Army to serve his country during the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War. After his military service, he returned to Panhandle, eventually retiring after 43 years with the company.
He loved being on being on the water, spending countless summers fishing on his boat. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting and hunting for morel mushrooms in the spring. George and Jene’ were members of Zionsville Christian Church.
George was a great dad and grandpa. He was always involved in the lives and activities of his daughter, Nadine, and later, his grandsons. When he was younger, he played baseball for Zionsville Little League. He then coached Nadine through her softball years with ZLL and in his later years, he and Jene’ loved to watch their grandsons play baseball for ZLL. George enjoyed watching all sports and was a big Purdue fan. He was so proud that his son-in-law, Steve, and three nephews graduated from Purdue, and that his grandson, Alex, currently attends Purdue.
George will be greatly missed by his family, and all of those that knew him.
He is survived by his daughter, Nadine (Steve) Anderson, grandsons: Stephen “Alex” and George “Sam” Anderson, stepsister, Gloria Kolb, brother, Mike Shelburne, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Perry, sisters: Elaine Shelburne and Carol Marsh, and his wife, Jene‘.
Family and friends will gather for visitation on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 11am until the time of his funeral service at 2pm at Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Care, 125 W. Sycamore St. Zionsville, IN 46077. He will be laid to rest in Zionsville Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.
