James Martin “Marty” Berger, 64 of Indianapolis passed away on April 3, 2024. Marty was born to James Othmar & Mary Helen (Rees) Berger in Terre Haute, IN on February 7, 1960. As a child, Marty liked to fish and play basketball, football and baseball for school teams and at the YMCA and Edgewood Little League. In high school, Marty was a member of the 1975-76 Regional finals basketball team at Northwest High School, where he graduated in 1978. After moving back to Indiana from California, Marty worked for Nies, Eggert Waterproofing, Co, Inc. (NEW), Walmart in the produce department and currently at Glenns Valley Elementary School as a custodian where he was loved by the entire staff. When he wasn’t working, you could find Marty on YouTube, trying to figure out how to fix something around the house or on his car. He found great pleasure in fixing things and making them better than before. He also enjoyed the Indianapolis 500 and Cincinnati Reds baseball. Marty was looking forward to mushroom hunting this spring, gambling at the new casino in Terre Haute and retiring at the end of this school year.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents, great nephew, Luca, and brother-in-law, Jim.
Marty is survived by his son Adam (Stephanie) Berger, grandchildren, Hailey, Jayden, Ronin, and Addy Berger of Nampa Idaho. Siblings: Mike (Jo Ellen) Berger of Brownsburg, IN; Linda (Jim) King of Winter Haven, FL; Beth (Dave) Dodds of Greencastle, IN; Barb (Jim) Irwin of Greenwood, IN; Nina Eads of Indianapolis, IN; Joe (Elaine) Berger of Indianapolis, IN and many, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Simplicity Funeral & Cremation Care, 7520 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, IN from 4pm to 6pm. A celebration of life will immediately follow the visitation.
