Leslie Phillip “Phil” Adams

Leslie Phillip “Phil” Adams, 80, of Anderson passed away, July 7, 2023 at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a brief illness.

He was born March 6, 1943 in Chesterfield, Indiana and was a lifelong area resident.

Phil was a 1961 graduate of Anderson High School and was a US Army Veteran.

He retired from General Motors, Anderson in 2001 after 39 years of service, 25 years at Delco Remy and 14 years at Magnequench.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Ann (Kendall) Adams whom he married, June 8, 1963; daughter, Brandy Michelle (husband, Jeremy) Wittenborn of Carmel; three grandsons, Derek Riley Wittenborn, Nathaniel Phillip Wittenborn and William Scott Wittenborn; brother, Jack Adams; niece Jessica (husband Chad) Frerker; nephew Pat Hiday.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie C. and Mary Margaret (Alford) Adams; and his sister, Linda Darlene Hiday.

Phil spent most of his summers on the water. He could be found water skiing, swimming and fishing in Wisconsin with his grandparents and later boating on the Ohio River with his aunt, uncle and many cousins. Phil introduced Peggy to this family tradition and they continued boating every summer even after having their daughter.

While Phil and Peggy were stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, they met a couple from Missouri, Tom and Betty Lewallen, who would become lifelong friends. At the end of their military service, Phil, Peggy, Tom and Betty began getting together each July to explore the ‘west’ mostly by moving from campground to beautiful, secluded campground in their respective RVs. This tradition continued after the birth of each couple’s daughters. Phil enjoyed sharing stories of the adventures they had and the mechanical mishaps that would often occur on these vacations. Get togethers and long phone calls were ongoing long after the RV adventures came to an end.

Phil spent four years volunteering his time as a band parent to Highland High School’s marching band while his daughter was a member. He enjoyed forming new relationships and being there to help any band member who needed it.

Phil loved helping other people. He was especially knowledgeable in automotive mechanics and would never hesitate to help friends or family who had car trouble.

Phil has spent the last couple of years as a dementia caregiver to his wife, Peggy, and continuing to be involved with his daughter and grandsons.

He was thankful to have had several wonderful “angels”, as he called them, who have stepped in recently to help him and provide support that he needed.

Phil was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle disposition and the unconditional love he showed his family.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at Condo & St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, 130 S. Main St., Wilkinson, Indiana from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 P.M., Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will include service remarks and military honors at 11 a.m. led by Reverend Sara Hayden.
