On Friday morning, May 20, 2022, Lum Lee, age 87, loving husband of Bik Yu (Becky) Lee and beloved father of five children, unexpectedly passed away at Community Hospital South after a sudden, brief illness.
Lum was born on December 27, 1934, in the city of Taishan in Guangdong province, China and emigrated to the United States in 1951. After graduating from Shortridge High school, he was drafted and proudly served in the United States Army. He enjoyed sharing stories of his time stationed in Germany. In 1962 he married Bik, and they settled in Greenwood to raise their family. Lum was a founding partner of the Lotus Garden Restaurant in Greenwood and Carmel. He was well known not only for his hospitality in the restaurant, but also for his expertise in teaching Chinese cooking in classes at IUPUI and in demonstrations on The Jim Gerard Show. Many customers tried their first Cantonese-style Chinese food in his restaurant, but he also made sure the menu included American food so that families with different tastes could dine together. He proudly served his community for 34 years.
Lum had a passion for gardening, fishing, and having coffee with his friends. He was known for his generosity and willingness to help others.
He is preceded in death by his father, Daniel Lee, mother, Yuet Don Lee, and sister.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bik Yu Lee; his children Elaine Lee, Donna Hawes, Cathy Lee-Everett, Pauline Lee, and Michael Lee, M.D.; and his granddaughter, Gina Everett.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at 1:00PM at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory- Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St., Greenwood, IN 46142. A visitation will be held from 10AM-1:00PM. Burial with military honors will immediately follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.

May God bless you and your family in your time of sorrow. Your Dad was one of the kindest and gentle men I ever knew. He gave me my 1st job ringing up waitress tickets and packing up carryout orders at the young age of 15. He will be truly missed!!! ❤

My sincere condolences to the Lee family. My Lee was a great guy, and an excellent restaurant man. He always checked to make sure my family enjoyed ourselves.

My family, Elvan& Janice & my siblings remember how happy we were As children to go to lotus Garden for special family celebrations and WE WERE ALWAYS TREATED LIKE PART OF THEIR FAMILY. I visited the restaurant When my mom and father were ill to get take out and mr Lee would always ask how they were doing. I wish comfort and peace for his family just as he did for my family during challenging times. What an honor to have known him

I am so sad to hear of this. I worked for Lum at Lotus Garden and Lum's Kitchen during high school and college. He had a great impact on me and my work ethic that would carry me into my adulthood and career to this day. He always believed in me and pushed me to do better. I felt honored when he told me I did a good job and was a hard worker. This ment something to me to have his approval, guidance, and praise. I have so many good memories working at Lotus Garden and Lum's Kitchen with Lum, Joyce, and Jason. Good times and good memories. My heart goes out to the family. Lum had a great impact on the Greenwood community and was a business leader. His legacy lives on in so many of us that worked for him through the years.

You always in our mind. Condolences to Mrs. Becky Lee and the huge family. Mr. Lee had help many friends and relatives during the Lotus Garden time. Hope you RIP!

My condolences to Mr. Lee's family and friends. I had the pleasure of working at Lotus Garden 30+ years ago while I was in college and have nothing but wonderful memories of Lum, his family, and the entire staff. Lum enjoyed getting me to try all of the "off menu" food that the cooks prepared at the end of the night. Being pushed outside of my comfort zone is what has made me an adventurous eater today. That may seem like a silly thing, but I'm so grateful for that experience.

I have so many fond memories of eating with our family and friends at Lotus Garden. It was always a good time as we were greeted with the most wonderful hospitality. My father, Milburn Wills who owned Wills Furniture in the same strip of shops, had his first Chinese food there as all the rest of us....a Hong Kong T-bone and he never looked back. It was a real love affair. Our daughter born in 1966 was introduced to Lotus Garden at 2 weeks old! her first outing. I have eaten at both locations in Carmel and in Greenwood. My husband and I fell in love with Chinese food at the grand opening of Lotus Garden Town and Country. Peace be with your family at this difficult time.

Lotus, Lum and Jimmy, like so many others, are all woven into many special memories throughout my life. When I was little my dad ate lunch at Lotus several times a week and often I would get to tag along....Lum would tease me because at the time all I would eat was a grilled cheese sandwich. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

How do you put into words, to describe how grateful you are to have known someone! Lum Lee is the brother that I never had. We talked on the phone several times daily, sports, fishing, politics, anything and everything. We told jokes, we laughed! Our fishing trips were so much fun and memorable! Thank You 大佬, for being there in my life! I miss your voice, your laugher! Gone but forever living in my heart. May you Rest In Peace!

Mr. Lee will be so missed by so many. His friendliness was such a trait of Lotus Garden. His kindness was present in so many of the memories of my family get togethers at the restaurant.

So sorry to hear of the death of your husband/dad. Lum was such a wonderful part of the community of Greenwood, and was especially kind to my sister Debbie who worked for him for several years in the 1970s.
