Marlene J. Weaver

Marlene J. Weaver, age 88, gained her angel wings peacefully on Sunday, April 7, 2024, surrounded by her closest family. Better known as “Tootie” to her friends and family, she was born on November 18, 1935, in Indianapolis to Ralph Sr and Mildred (Kempter) Kenworthy and was a long-time resident of Greenwood. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Arthur Weaver, with whom she married on June 4, 1955, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Arthur passed in 2022, a month before their 67th wedding anniversary.

Marlene attended Sacred Heart Catholic School from grades 1-12 and was making plans to serve the Catholic Church as a nun following graduation. Those plans were altered, however, when she was introduced to Arthur, a handsome Marine on leave at the time, by her friend Shirley Hogue. The rest, as they say, is history.

Marlene remained a devout Catholic, and truly loved and lived her faith by example to all.

She also had a deep and very special affinity to the blessed virgin mother, Mary.

Her true calling, however, was that of a loving, devoted mother, and eventually, becoming a “Nana,” a role she cherished.

Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her; and she was present for the birth of each one.

Marlene was very faith and family focused. Her passions lay within the church and her people. She devoted time each week for years to the church’s perpetual adoration chapel, and was part of the OLG parish festival each year, running the quilt booth with her sister-in-law, Jo Ann. As far as family and her beloved grandchildren, there was not an event, play, concert, or recognition ceremony that she did not attend. As previously stated, her family was everything to her, and each of them carry an unconditional love and devotion with them every day.

She also enjoyed the deep and lasting friendships she made during the many years as a member of the Tri Chi sorority. She was hard-working, well-loved, and devoted to her many friends. She also worked at the Greenwood Middle School cafeteria and retired after 30 years of service.

She was also preceded in death by parents, her brother Ralph Kenworthy Jr, sister Phyllis Bego, and nephew Ralph Kenworthy III.

She is survived by two daughters: Julie (Michael) Garrett and Laurie (Tim) Worton; six grandchildren: Wesley (Kayleen) Garrett, Whitley Holt, Michelle Hooper, Melissa (Anthony) Bensel, Benjamin Krout, and Mara (Kyle) White; eleven great-grandchildren, her beloved sister-in-law Jo Ann Kenworthy, and several nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will take place from 4pm-8pm, Thursday April 11, at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main Street.

A Mass of Catholic Burial will take place at 1:00pm, Friday April 12, at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 S. Meridian Street, Greenwood.

She will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens following the service.
