Nellie Adkins Williams, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023, at the age of 81. Born on May 23, 1942, to Lucian & Myrtle (Stout) Wilcher in McKinney, Kentucky, she brought warmth and joy into the lives of those around her. Nellie was a remarkable woman whose love for family, the outdoors, and gardening defined her rich and fulfilling life.
Nellie was a loving wife to her husband Drexel B. Adkins for 30 years until his death in 1986. She found love a second time and spent 29 years with her husband Robert Williams until his passing in 2021. Nellie’s family was the cornerstone of her life and brought her more joy than anything else.
Nellie had a deep fondness of life on the farm. One of her favorite things was taking her John Deere Gator and riding back to the pond anytime one of her children or grandchildren came hunting, camping, or fishing, or simply enjoying a peaceful day by the water. She found solace and happiness in nature’s embrace. Her adventurous spirit and appreciation for the beauty of the world inspired those around her to cherish the simple pleasures of life.
Nellie loved planting and tending to all of her flowers. Her green thumb transformed the farm into a breathtaking oasis of colors and fragrances. The blooming flowers, thriving plants, and meticulously cared-for garden reflected her nurturing spirit and love for life’s beauty.
Known for her kindness and generosity, Nellie touched the hearts of many in her community. Her willingness to lend a helping hand, coupled with a contagious smile, made her a cherished friend and confidante. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and goodwill that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Nellie is preceded in death by her parents, her son, Larry Keith Adkins (1982), her first husband, Drexel Benjamin Adkins (1986), and her second husband, Robert Williams (2021). Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Wallace Wilcher, Leroy Wilcher, Jerry Wilcher, Lewis Wilcher, and her first grandchild, Rebecca (Adkins) Hendley.
Nellie is survived by her loving children, Timothy Adkins of Indianapolis, Joey (Kelly) Adkins of Greenfield, and Chris (Beth) Adkins of Fairland. She is also survived by her younger, and only sister, Joyce (John) Moyer of Whiteland, along with 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a community grateful for the positive impact she had on their lives. Though she may no longer be with us in person, her spirit lives on in the cherished memories and the enduring love she leaves behind.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home – Franklin Township, 5950 E. Thompson Road, Indianapolis, from 11am to 1pm. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation. The burial will take place at Acton Cemetery.
