Richard Earl Keaton age 89, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away on February 23, 2023, at the Monticello Healthcare in Monticello. He was born on August 25, 1933, to Earl and Gertrude (Parker) Keaton in Scottsburg, Indiana. Richard graduated from Shelbyville High school and then enlisted in the US Navy. He was a Machinist’s mate, first class aboard the USS Bennington. He was presented a Letter of Commendation for his outstanding performance of duty during an explosion and fires onboard the aircraft carrier. Richard worked for 25 years as a Field Engineer Specialist for IBM and was able to retire at age 53. He was known, by many, for building a 52-foot Ketch sailboat in a pole barn in his backyard. He dreamed of sailing around the world. Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley who he married in 1953, a sister, Marilyn Carew, and brother Ronald Keaton. He is survived by his two sons, Allan Keaton and Gary (Cindy) Keaton, and daughter, Deanna (Kevin) Slentz, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a brother, Joseph Keaton.
Viewing will begin at 1pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, 481 West Main Street, Greenwood, Indiana, on March 5, 2023, followed by a memorial service at 3pm.
