Richard “Dick” H. Kouns

Richard (Dick) Howard Kouns, passed away on April 12, 2023, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon, Indiana.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Janalene, and sons Brian (wife Jennifer) and Brent.  He was blessed with two grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Nate Kouns and Hope Gullion (husband Ethan).  He is also survived by his brother Donald Kouns (wife Anne), and sister Carolyn Barta (husband Dan).

Richard was born on October 5, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana to parents Howard and Dorothy Kouns.  He graduated from Zionsville Community High School in 1950.  After high school, he attended Purdue University and graduated from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in 1956.  He then served two years in the Army as a hospital pharmacist at a special weapon facility (Atomic Energy Commission) at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

After his military obligation, he returned to Indianapolis and was hired by Eli Lilly and Company where he was employed for 34 years in various management positions before retiring in 1993.  After retirement, he was a pharmacy volunteer at St. Vincent Hospital.

Richard will be remembered for his love of yard work, mowing his huge yard with his Kubota tractor, gardening, and helping his boys when they were younger with the large strawberry patch.  He relished the many Kouns Family Reunions, and especially the McCormick’s Creek camping trips with all the relatives and the kid’s cousins and challenging the teens to baseball matches.  Richard was also a Mason, a Shriner and in the Scottish Rite and a long-time member of the Zionsville Christian Church.

There will be a celebration of his life at Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Care, 125 W. Sycamore St., Zionsville on April 24. Visitation will be 10 am to 12 pm.  Funeral services will be immediately following by a burial ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery, 935 E. Washington St., Lebanon, Indiana.
