Robert G. Porter, 84, passed away June 13, 2013, in North Salem, IN. He was born March 17, 1929 in the same home where he died. He was the son of Byron C. Porter and Mary Clahan Porter. Fondly regarded as “Bob”, he lived his life in service as corporal, husband, father, farmer, entrepreneur, and volunteer. After graduating from North Salem High School in 1947, Bob attended Purdue University. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was the owner and director of Porter Funeral Home for fifty-five years. Other businesses included the Porter family farm, Pace & Porter Furniture Store, North Salem Sundries, and Porter Insurance Agency. Bob also served many years as the board chairman of the North Salem State Bank. Bob was a dedicated and tireless volunteer. In 1985 he was the recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash award given by Governor Robert Orr for his distinguished service to the State of Indiana. He served as a board member of Asbury Towers Retirement Community, Fairview Cemetery, Hendricks County Community Foundation, and Hendricks County Senior Services. He was a longtime member of the North Salem United Methodist Church, Indiana Scottish Rite, Hazelrig Masonic Lodge, Jamestown American Legion, Lizton Lions Club, Jamestown Odd Fellows,50 year member of Lizton Knights of Pythias and North Salem Jaycees. Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years Barbara J. McKinsey Porter, his sister Patrica Porter Neet, his children; Cynthia Davis and husband Wil, Byron Porter and wife Lora, Christina Hurt and husband Dan, Molly Beard and husband Steve, his grandchildren; Jennifer Davis Stanley and husband Casey, Melissa Porter Meek and husband Adam, Steve Davis and wife Sara, Elizabeth Davis Carder and husband Matt, Brittany Beard Moser and husband Logan, Hailey Beard, and S. Mac Hurt, and his great-grandchildren; Anna and John Stanley, Anthony and Daphne Meek, Bryant, Benson, and Lena Davis, Silas and Claire Carder, and Jackson Porter Moser. He is proceeded in death by his grandson, Craig M. Porter, and great granddaughter, Amelia Mae Meek. Funeral Arrangements are being directed by Porter Funeral Home. They will be held at the United Methodist Church in North Salem, IN as follows: Calling hours Friday, June 14th 4-8pm and Saturday, June 15th 10am-2pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 2pm.
