Sandra Louise Hollingshead (Cook) passed away Sunday April 30, 2023. She was born in Camp Atterbury, Indiana to Eugene Cook and Alma Cook (Abt) on May 27, 1944.
She attended Purdue University where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 with a major in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. She received her Master of Arts in Special Education from Ball State University in 1970. Sandra obtained her Doctor of Education in School Administration from Ball State University in 1981.
Sandra dedicated her life to education. She started her career as a teacher in the Muncie Community Schools from 1970-1982. Thereafter, Sandra became the Director of Special Education for South Central Area Special Education Cooperative in Campbellsburg, IN. She went on to be the Program Coordinator at Wayne Township Metropolitan School District from 1985-1997. Later, Sandra became the Director of Special Programs at Hamilton Southeastern Schools and served in that role from 1997-1999. At the time of her retirement in 2011, Sandra was the Assistant Superintendent of Hamilton Southeastern Schools, a position she served in since 1999.
In addition to her career in education, Sandra was on the Board of Directors of Forum Credit Union from 2000-2018, Secretary/Treasurer for Day Nursery Auxiliary of Indianapolis, as well as a member of the Zionsville Penny Putters Club and the Zionsville Women’s Club. Sandra also loved to travel, golf, listen to jazz music, and spend time with her family.
Sandra is survived by her husband Richard Hollingshead and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Lucy; her daughter, Hillary Weigle, her son-in-law, Troy Sphar, and her grandpugs, Harlow and Chubbles; her stepson, Brian Hollingshead, his wife, Erin Hollingshead, and her grandchildren, Palmer and Cooper; her sister, Cheryl McMahon and her niece, Jamie Fugate (McMahon); and her sister-in-law Mary Cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Alma Cook; her first husband, James Weigle (father of Hillary); her in-laws, Merle and Lucille Weigle; and her brother, Hershel E. Cook.
Visitation will be held on Friday May 5, 2023 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. for public remembrance at Simplicity Funeral & Cremation Care, 125 W. Sycamore Street, Zionsville, IN.
