Thomas Edgar Alexander, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 29. He was the light of our lives, a wonderful storyteller, and kind to everyone he met.
Tom was born on January 22, 1935, to the late Iona and Alvin Alexander in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tom spent his childhood years happily exploring the city that he loved. Upon graduating from Arsenal Tech High School, he entered the U.S. Army and participated in the Korean War.
When he returned to the states, he was stationed at Fort Belvoir, near Washington D.C. where he met the love of his life, his soulmate, and his wife of nearly 65 years – Nancy Cook, who was working for the FBI at that time.
After marrying, Tom and Nancy moved to Indianapolis where they raised their three daughters to be strong, independent women. Tom became a master electrician after completing the IBEW Local 481 apprenticeship program and enjoyed the last 29 years of his career working at ERMCO.
Tom happily spent his retirement years on many projects around his home and property and volunteering in the community and at his church – Salem Lutheran – where he’d been a member for over 50 years. He had been a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.
Tom leaves behind his loving wife – Nancy, their three daughters – Connie Alexander, Jenny (Mark) Budreau, and Laura (Kevin) Alter, the apple of his eye – granddaughter Brooke Alter, and nieces and nephews in South Carolina, Maryland, Florida, Ohio, and Alabama.
He is preceded in death by his sisters – Jeanne (Bill) Corns and Patricia (David) Marksbary.
A small family celebration is planned for later this month. Contributions can be made to Servants at Work, Inc., 8427 Zionsville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46268, a faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing freedom to people with permanent disabilities through the construction of wheelchair ramps.
