Vera Walton passed away peacefully at Bickford Cottage in Lafayette on January 21, 2015. Vera was born to Leonard and Grace McKee Keal in Rush County on January 29, 1931. She graduated from New Salem High School in 1948 and Methodist School of Nursing in 1952. She was an RN both in a pediatric practice, and eventually retiring from the OB/GYN unit at Wishard Hospital. Vera, who was from New Salem, married Verne Walton from North Salem in 1957. They spent most of their life on a farm in the North Salem area. After retirement, Vera and Verne travelled to numerous WWII reunions around the country and were blessed with many new friendships. Vera was active in the Roachdale VFW Auxiliary and was a volunteer nurse with the North Putnam Schools. She also loved serving as a chaperone on the North Putnam band trips. Her husband, Verne, passed away in 2009 and she eventually moved into The Hearth at Prestwick in Avon, followed by Bickford Cottage in Lafayette. Vera’s sense of humor and signature phrases made her a popular resident. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Verne, her brother Frank Keal, her son Mark Walton and grandson Clayton Spencer. She is survived by her daughter Lisa and husband Kurt Harker of West Lafayette; her daughter Amy and husband Stephen Spencer of North Salem; daughter-in-law Kathy Walton; grandchildren Eric Walton, Haylie Spencer and Kelsey Walton and great-granddaughter Rowen Spencer, all of North Salem. The family would like to extend profound thanks to the staff at Guardian Angel Hospice and Bickford Cottage. Family and friends will gather Sunday, January 25, 2015, 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the North Salem United Methodist Church, North Salem, Indiana. Services will be held at the church, Monday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ann Spahr and Pastor Tom Covington officiating. Vera will be laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery, North Salem, IN.
