W. Bruce Laetsch, 92, passed gently in his sleep on Sunday, January 2, 2022. It is with sorrow, but also with a tremendous sense of peace and comfort that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce, preceded him in death in 2012. Bruce was born SeptemberContinue Reading

I was a student of Bruce's at Wood H.S. and we became lifelong friends. We had much in common: playing tennis at Butler, following Butler basketball, the United Methodist Church, talking politics (especially Church politics), and his beloved Garfield Park. I told him once, in front of Joyce, that he was the best teacher I ever
had. He was a great and caring man that impacted more lives than he ever realized. He will be missed. Willard Mays

Bruce and Joyce have been our friends ever since we moved to Garfield Park 17 years ago. Better friends and neighbors we could not have had. Linda, Donna, Charles and Jim are in our hearts and prayers with the loss of their father. We are grateful to know that both Bruce and Joyce are in the arms of their loving God.

A great teacher and a great friend. Every time I was with him was a joy. His dry sense of humor brightened my day even when I was having tough times.

I was blessed to see him many times in the past few years.

I would bring him shrimp and take him out for a steak.

One of a kind.

Bruce was a great history teacher, department head, and co-worker to all who knew him. As I was also a teacher at Wood High School and then at Washington High School, I got to know Bruce well. I counted him as a friend and through him I got to know his wife Joyce as well. I and some other co-workers met him and Joyce for lunch at Shapiro's several times. Those were moments of friendship and conversation. My condolences to his family. He will always be remembered because of his friends and his life of service.

My sincere condolences to the Laetsch family. I am a graduate of the Class of 85 from Crispus Attucks HS where I had Mr Laetsch for government. He was a cool calm and gentle teacher who made you think. He never accepted the easy answer and would ask you to justify your answer. Thank you Mr Laetsch for being a great teacher who lead quietly yet mightily in our school!
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

To the best grandpa a girl could ever ask for, I love you so much! I will miss our chats on teaching, discoveries in far off places, and everything in between. You inspired me to travel the world and share what I learned with others. Shaping young minds is a calling I inherited from you and the servant leadership I witnessed from you and grandma while I was growing up made me into the person I am today. Although I can't call you on the phone anymore, I know you and grandma are keeping watch over us all and you will forever be in my heart

Having lived across the street from Bruce and Joyce brings many fond memories of them heading to the Garfield courts for a match. Your obit is spot on in its accolades and description of a truly special couple. Was glad we kept in contact.

Mr. Laetsch, (as I will always know him by) was a great father to one of my dearest friends (Jim). I will always value the memories as well as the friendship that he and Joyce had with my parents.

One of my favorite people in the world. I could ALWAYS count on Bruce for some seriously funny and groaner jokes. I miss our lunches at The New Jerusalem. Bruce was one of the kindest and most intelligent men that I have ever known. And he was still so in love with Joyce even after all of these years. My heart is sad for the loss of such a great man here on earth, but I rejoice that he and Joyce are finally together again. To all of his family, I am honored to have called Bruce my friend.

What an amazing person Bruce was and what a remarkable life he lead. It is difficult to imagine the scope of how much the world was changed because of the lives he interacted with through his family, the Marine Corps, students, volunteer associates and church. His dedication and unwavering love for his dear Joyce serves as the standard for what a marriage should be. May precious memories bring comfort and peace to those who mourn his passing.
