Wayne Randall Slater, 83, passed away on Thursday, March 28, at Aspen Trace Facility in Greenwood, Indiana surrounded by family.
He was born May 22, 1940, in Bicknell, Indiana to Eldo and Josephine Slater. He met the love of his life, Sandra Kay Helt at Washington Street United Methodist Church, and they were married on December 12, 1959. She preceded him in death in 2022, and they celebrated their sixty-second anniversary in 2021.
Wayne was a graduate of Washington High School in Indianapolis. He spent many years taking college classes to complete his degree while working and raising a family. He received his degree from Indiana Wesleyan.
Wayne spent many years working for IU hospitals as a Patient Accounts Specialist. He loved computers and entered the IT field when computers took up the whole room.
Wayne loved playing softball, volleyball, ping pong, and golf in his younger days. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. Wayne liked to cook and entertain for family and friends.
In his retirement he enjoyed going to Toastmasters meetings and volunteering to help patients with medical insurance questions. Wayne also enjoyed spending winters in Florida with his wife, Sandy.
Surviving are his daughter, Connie Slater Allen, and son in law Kent Allen; his son, Scott Slater and his daughter in law Sandy R Slater; his grandchildren, Amy (Dan) Vinton and Craig (Brianne) Allen; his step grandchildren, Christopher, and Presley Nicholson, and five great grandchildren, Yoshie Vinton, Elijah Vinton, Porter Vinton, Poppy Allen, and Wells Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sandy K Slater, and his brother Richard Slater.
A funeral service will take place at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory – Greenwood Chapel, on Monday, April 1st at 1:00 PM, with visitation from 11:00 AM until time of service.
