William “Bill” D. Jackson, 76, of Sumrall, MS, formerly of Greenwood, IN passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021.Bill was born in Greencastle, IN on March 13, 1945, a son of Vera Jackson and the late Claude Jackson. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1963 and went on to attend Indiana University. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. After his time in the service, he met his wife, Sandra Lucas and married her on June 28, 1969.Bill worked for the Indiana Department of the American Legion, and then the National Headquarters, serving veterans for 27 years altogether. After his time with the American Legion, he was appointed as the Director of Veterans Affairs for the State of Indiana. He finished his working career as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Greenwood, retiring in 2008.He was very active in his community, serving as President of the Greenwood Police Merit Board, and the Greenwood Airport Board. He was also a former President of Greenwood Little League, the Director of Hoosier Boys’ State for over 30 years and was part of the selection committee for the U.S. Military Academies.Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sandra; son Brian Jackson; mother Vera Jackson; sister Mary Ellen (Stan) Misiaszek and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Jackson; his sister, Bonita Weaver and a nephew, Billy Dean Yutzy.Family and friends will gather for visitation on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, from 11am until the time of the funeral service at 1pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, 481 W. Main St. Greenwood, IN 46142. Burial will immediately follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Hoosier Boys’ State, 5440 Herbert Lord Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46216, Greenwood Athletics Booster Club, 615 W. Smith Valley Rd. Greenwood, IN or Chapel of the Cross United Methodist Church, 15 Dale Dr. Columbia, MS 39429.

Just learned of Bill's passing when I read his obituary in "The Southside Times." I first met Bill in 1976 when I went to work at the American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters. I remember his days at the Indiana Legion and National Headquarters. He was always good-hearted and friendly when we saw each other in passing. When my dad died in 1983, Bill wrote me a very kind, reverent, and touching note of condolence, and I still have that note in my keepsakes. All the Jackson family have my deep and sincere sympathy. May Bill rest in the eternal peace of the Master of all.

So sorry to learn of his passing. I grew up with him, a fine young man, and an exemplary life lived. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He had a lot of integrity in everything he did. He was respected and mentored by Barney Breedlove. Past Department Finance Officer of The Anerican Legion Department of Indiana. I've known Bill since 1970 or so. May he rest in Peace. Prayers of comfort for his family.

Bill was a good friend and great to have as a partner in any golf match! He made so many friends playing in the Bullpen at Canebrake and at the annual TRISTATE GOLF OUTINGs with guys from several states including Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee. He will be remembered very fondly by all! I will miss his good humor and quick wit

I am glad I had a chance to shoot the breeze for a bit with Bill prior to his heading to Indiana. He was a true gentleman and a friend. He will be in my thoughts.

I enjoyed many golf outings to Alabama with Bill as one of my travel partners. He was always there when I needed him to give me a break from driving. I also had many memorable golfing experiences with Bill. He always played just good enough to win! RIP my friend, you will be missed.
